What is Mageball?
Mageball is the Astral Cluster's favorite enchanted pastime; almost every World Sphere independently invented some version of Mageball before it's encounter with The Entity, and the few unfamiliar with the game before the end of their universes quickly fell in love with Mageball upon their arrival. Whatever kind of World Sphere you call home, Mageball is the game to play.
Beyond being an entertaining sport for the masses to enjoy, Mageball also serves a critical role of diplomacy between the Astral Cluster's many varied cultures. It is often used to peacefully settle disputes between civilizations. Because of this, ambitious World Spheres take who is on their Mageball teams as seriously as who leads their militaries, although many more relaxed lands are simply there for the wholesome fun. Whether navigating a tense political rivalry or simply making an other-worldly friend, a Mageball game is often used to break the ice.
In Mageball, two teams take turns using a blunt object lacqueued with a protective anti-magic wax (traditionally a bat) to hit an enchanted golden Mageball across the ballpark. If they succeed in hitting the ball, they try to run around as many bases as they can to score points. Meanwhile, the opposing team tries to recover the Mageball to tag the runner out before they can make a full roundabout or stop "safe" on one of the bases. The opposing team can also set magical hazards to slow the runner down. The game goes for 9 rounds - called innings - and the team with the most runs at the end wins, or extra innings are played until the tie is broken — there are no ties in Mageball.
